Bodie is an interesting place that became a booming town when gold was discovered there in the late 1800s. With that discovery the town's population exponentially grew in a few years and it became known as the most violent and lawless of all the gold mining towns in the West. With the sudden wealth that was flowing into the city it became a place filled with saloons, places to gamble, opium dens, and houses of ill repute. It was even reported at one time that Bodie had an average of at least one murder a day. As the gold mining operations slowly dwindled the population of the town decreased and people fled the town in search of other opportunities. Finally, in 1962 the state of CA took over the management of Bodie and turned it into a state historic park.
Today, Bodie is known as a town frozen in time and offers visitors an amazing glimpse into what life might have been like in the Wild West during the gold rush.
